The Jane Johnson Foundation serves students with significant medical, orthopedic and cognitive disabilities.  These students are dependent on medical support and technology and are significantly below average intellectual functioning existing concurrently with profound deficits in the area of adaptive behavior.  Common medical conditions include hydrocephaly, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, Cortical Visual Impairment as a result of brain damage, hypertonia, hypotonia, tracheotomy and compromised digestive and respiratory systems, resulting in the need for feeding tubes and or oxygen.

Most of these students are non-ambulatory and require multiple orthopedic surgeries.  Medical technology has lengthened their life expectancy but has not insured a high quality of life.  They are often uncomfortable due to movement limitations and health issues. The traditional classroom environment and curriculum is not effective in providing beneficial sensory stimulation.  In the past the focus has been “taking care” of these students, which made them passive participants in their school experience. Jane’s Rooms have changed that.
